| Three-Dimensional Radiotherapy Treatment Planning |
| One of the ways Thompson Cancer Survival Center is "Leading to the Cure" is through 3-D treatment planning. Radiotherapy treatment planning is a software package that creates 3-D computer images of the patient's anatomy, including cancer and normal tissues. This technology, which is now the standard of care for most radiation treatments, pinpoints tumors and allows physicians to minimize radiation to healthy tissues.
Thompson was the first in the region to offer 3-D treatment planning. Since 1996, more than 5,000 3-D treatment plans have been generated here. In fact, the facility's physicians and physicists have helped the manufacturers of 3-D treatment planning systems improve the accuracy of their software. The radiation oncology team has also published numerous journal articles resulting from their original clinical research about the technology.
