The current consensus in the cancer community is that breast conservative treatment is superior to mastectomy for early stage breast cancer. Breast Conservative Treatment consists of the removal of the tumor (lumpectomy), while preserving the appearance of the breast. After surgery, radiation therapy is used to kill any remaining disease in the breast. The major advantage of this treatment technique is that it provides survival equivalent to total mastectomy while cosmetically preserving the breast.
At the Thompson Cancer Survival Center, much progress has been made in the successful treatment of breast cancer. Some patients with breast cancer that are treated with radiation therapy may experience painful skin reactions, similar to a sunburn. These reactions sometimes diminish the cosmetic results of the procedure. Consequently, treatment techniques were developed that help reduce acute skin reactions in patients treated with breast cancer.
