Lung Cancers

Lung cancer is often difficult to treat because lung tissue is so sensitive. However, several radiation treatment methods have been developed at Thompson Cancer Survival Center to better treat lung cancer. These protocols include: These treatments allow physicians to give higher doses of radiation to patients while reducing side effects.

Researchers at Thompson were the first in the world to use helical TomoTherapy to treat lung cancer. This treatment is advantageous for several reasons:

  • Patients can be precisely positioned for each treatment using TomoTherapy's built-in CT imaging capabilities. No other radiation therapy system in the region has this capability.

  • The CT images give radiation oncologists a daily measure of the tumor's response to radiation. Based on that response, treatment is adjusted or adapted on a daily or weekly basis to best treat the patient.
