Colorectal Cancer

Colon cancer begins in the lining of the ascending, transverse, descending or sigmoid colon or the lining of the rectum. This slow-growing cancer usually begins as a specific type of polyp, an adenoma, which can turn cancerous, Removing these abnormal growths can prevent them from becoming cancer. If not prevented or detected, colorectal cancer can grow into and through the other layers of the lower gastrointestinal tract over a period of years. More than 150,000 cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year.
