Thompson's complete range of diagnostics includes conventional X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT or CAT scans), positron emission tomography and other diagnostic tools and technologies.
PET Scans
In 2001 Thompson Cancer Survival Center West was the first facility in the region - and just the second in the world - with the LSO PET scanner. This scanner can detect cancer as small as 1/25,000th of an inch, and do it in a fraction of the time required by previous technologies. Now Thompson is pioneering the next generation of PET-CT scanner that can find tumors faster and more accurately than ever before. The new Biograph TruePoint PEToCT cuts scan time by as much as 50%, so patients spend less time in the machine. Digital processing time is reduced dramatically, so doctors can examine images without delay. The new TruePoint PEToCT has higher resolution, so doctors can identify tumors which might go undetected with other technologies. In fact, it can find tumors and metastases at the molecular level, long before they would become visible with other systems. Thompson's PET Imaging Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology. Because a PET scan reveals changes in the body's metabolism, it can show what stage lung cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma, head and neck cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma and many other cancers have reached. A single whole body PET scan can reveal the original site or sites of the cancer and any places to which it has spread. PET also can be used to determine whether a tumor is benign or malignant. PET can correctly identify cancers 95% of the time, so painful, expensive surgery is often unnecessary for diagnosis. Thompson Cancer Survival Center’s PET Imaging Center is accredited in positron emission tomography (PET) by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Being an accredited center in both oncology and brain imaging assures patients that they are being treated by a team of professionals who have a proven record of adhering to the most rigid of treatment standards and achieving the level of excellence necessary as mandated by the ACR.

Outreach Services
The mobile mammogram unit offers low cost screening mammograms to women in the communities where they live and work. Mammograms are provided at no cost to the financially eligible. Free prostate and cervical cancer screenings are provided in collaboration with several rural health clinics throughout East Tennessee. Cancer Outreach Services collaborates with local businesses and community organizations to provide education about cancer detection and prevention to communities who are medically the least served and most at risk. Each year, thousands of people receive potentially life saving services from Thompson's Cancer Outreach Services. |
