Prevention and early detection are important tools in the fight to decrease the incidence of cancer in our country. But providing access to these much needed medical and educational services are two of the largest hurdles to cross in this effort. Thompson Cancer Survival Center has identified areas where accessibility and cancer education are limited and has implemented programs designed to meet these
needs.
One of the innovative ways Thompson is impacting the accessibility issue is through the use of a portable mammography unit. Each year our Cancer Outreach Services (COS) staff travels to
impoverished and or under-served areas like rural churches, physician offices, and community centers to
provide screening mammography services for women. For many, this program offers their only opportunity to take advantage of low-cost breast health care.
Free community screenings are another way to heighten awareness of early detection benefits as well as providing quality medical services to a group. Skin and prostate screenings are also held annually at Thompson.
Several of these programs offered through COS are funded through the generosity of The Thompson Foundation, area corporations, individuals, and Thompson employees. The mission of COS is
to focus education and screening efforts in an efficient and costeffective manner that will enable us to serve the impoverished, elderly, minorities, and the high-risk working poor. This is why we provide mammograms at no cost to the financially eligible, free prostate screenings, and sponsor cervical cancer screenings at free clinics.
