Cancer treatments are as individual as the people diagnosed with this disease. At Thompson Cancer Survival Center - West, we employ a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Working together, our physicians help provide the best treatment plan for each patient.

Medical oncology is an important part of the treatment offered at the Center. Thompson Oncology Group is comprised of a number of medical oncologists, each well-versed in all areas of oncology care. They provide state-of-the-art treatment with the newest and most effective chemotherapy drugs available.

Thompson initiated the area's first cancer clinical trials program in 1989. Since that time, over 1000 patients have participated in a variety of studies. A clinical trial is a study conducted with cancer patients to evaluate new treatment. These treatments involve either new cancer-fighting drugs awaiting approval from the F. D. A., or a new combination of standard cancer treatments (radiation, surgery and chemotherapy). Clinical trials allow us to investigate promising new treatments and learn more about their potential risks, benefits, and effectiveness in destroying cancer cells.

Weekly tumor conferences are held to discuss difficult or unusual cases. Physicians, nurses and other professional staff attend the weekly conferences which are open to all interested physicians.

Thompson's autologous stemcell transplant program is one of the select facilities in the country to be accredited through FAHCT, (Foundation for the Accreditation of Hematopoletic Cell Therapy). The Center, in collaboration with the University of Tennessee Medical Center, has staffed an autologous stem cell transplantation laboratory since 1993. The program targets patients with breast cancer, lymphoma and/or leukemia and can be done primarily on an outpatient basis.
