An employee at Thompson Cancer Network was honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses on February 10, 2022. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.
Lawana Evans, RN is an Oncology Nurse Navigator at Thompson Cancer’s Oak Ridge location.
Lawana was nominated by a patient for going above and beyond to care for her throughout her cancer journey. Her nominator wrote, “God sent me an angel in the form of a nurse named Lawana. She was with me every step of the way. I will never forget her and my family will forever be grateful to her.”
The patient explained that Lawana’s presence at every appointment calmed her nerves and gave her strength. When the patient was admitted to the hospital and visitors were not allowed due to COVID-19 protocols, Lawana personally checked in with her every day to make sure she had everything she needed.
These are just a few examples of the incredible work that Lawana does every day.
The DAISY Committee presented Lawana with a pin, a certificate, daisies, The Healer’s Touch sculpture, and cinnamon rolls for the entire department to share. Congratulations, Lawana! You make us so proud, and we appreciate your commitment to always putting your patients first.
