An employee at Thompson Cancer Network was honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses on February 8, 2022. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days.
Shila Newman, RN, OCN, ONN-CG, is an oncology nurse navigator at our Knoxville Downtown location, and the Supervisor of the Oncology Nurse Navigation team.
Shila was nominated by a patient’s family member for the care, compassion, and guidance she provided throughout their cancer treatment. She always made herself available to the patient and family members, even communicating with them after hours to check on them. She worked behind the scenes to make the process as easy as possible. She made sure they understood the plan of care, and coordinated quick medical records requests for other members of the healthcare team.
Her nominator wrote, “Shila has done many things since we met her just a few months ago. She listened to the spoken and unspoken language of her patient. Shila was a rudder during an unexpected storm. She is a fabulous example of the difference between a good nurse and a GREAT nurse.”
These are just a few examples of the incredible work that Shila does every day.
The DAISY Committee presented Shila with a pin, a certificate, daisies, The Healer’s Touch sculpture, and cinnamon rolls for the entire department to share. Congratulations, Shila! You make us so proud, and we appreciate your commitment to always putting your patients first.
