Michelle Cannon, a medical assistant at our Thompson Oncology Group – Blount location, was honored with the first-ever Rob Sanders Award on February 5, 2020. Created in honor of Rob Sanders, this award recognizes non-nurse employees who go above and beyond to improve the experience for our patients, family members, and coworkers.
Michelle was nominated by several coworkers for her wiliness to go out of her way to provide care and comfort to our patients. She often visits patients in the hospital to cheer them up. Recently, she even brought a patient some of their favorite snacks and warm potato soup from a local restaurant.
One coworker says she “always has a smile and a kind word for the patients and their families. Everyone loves Michelle!” Michelle also diligently reads the local obituaries to notify staff of any patients that may have passed away and she will often go visit the funeral home to pay her respects. These are just a few examples of how Michelle truly does honor Rob’s legacy and uphold our pledge to always put our patients first.
We planned a surprise ceremony to give Michelle the award, which was made extra special because Rob’s father, Ned Sanders, drove all the way from Greeneville, TN to be there. Each Rob Sanders Award winner receives a beautiful hand-carved wooden award, a succulent garden, and thumbprint cookies to share with their coworkers. They also receive a certificate and a hang-tag to wear under their badge. It was a wonderful celebration and a touching way to honor Rob’s legacy.
